On October 6, 2014, the project then known as Realcoin issued its first dollar-pegged tokens on the Bitcoin blockchain via the Omni Layer, weeks before rebranding to Tether in November. The model it pioneered went on to become crypto's de facto settlement and liquidity layer, with USDT eventually exceeding $100 billion in circulation despite years of questions about its reserves.
