On July 22, 2014, Ethereum opened a 42-day public ether sale, pricing ETH at 2000 per BTC for the first two weeks before declining to 1337 per BTC (a number chosen with great seriousness). The sale ran through September 2 and pulled in roughly 31,500 BTC, about $18 million at the time, making it one of the largest crowdfunding events to date and the de facto template every subsequent ICO would copy.
