On March 14, 2016, at block 1,150,000, Ethereum activated its Homestead hard fork, the network's second major release and the point at which developers felt comfortable enough to delete the word "safe" from the website's beta disclaimers. It introduced protocol tweaks like the DELEGATECALL opcode and removed the "canary contracts" that had let the core team halt the chain, nudging Ethereum from cautious beta toward something resembling a production network.
