On April 12, 2023, Ethereum activated the combined Shanghai (execution layer) and Capella (consensus layer) upgrade, collectively dubbed "Shapella," which for the first time let validators withdraw staked ETH locked since the Beacon Chain deposit contract opened in late 2020. This closed the last open loop of the proof-of-stake transition, finally turning roughly 18 million staked ETH from a one-way deposit into something you could actually get back out.
