On December 1, 2020, Ethereum's Beacon Chain produced its genesis block, bootstrapping a parallel proof-of-stake consensus layer that ran alongside the still-mining mainnet with 21,063 validators on day one. It did no actual transaction processing for nearly two years, serving as a proving ground until The Merge finally wired it into mainnet in September 2022. A quiet start to a long-promised divorce from mining.
