On August 23, 2021, Visa announced it had paid 49.5 ETH (about $150,000) for CryptoPunk #7610, a pixelated mohawked avatar it described as a strategic study of NFT infrastructure. The purchase, facilitated by Anchorage, promptly set off a CryptoPunks buying frenzy, with roughly 90 of the avatars trading within the hour, and remains the canonical "a payments giant bought a JPEG" moment of the 2021 NFT mania.
