On 1 November 2022 the Reserve Bank of India went live with its wholesale CBDC pilot, initially confined to settling secondary-market government securities trades among nine banks including SBI, HDFC and HSBC. It made India one of the first top-five economies to move a central bank digital currency from white paper to actual settlement, even if the use case was about as glamorous as interbank bond plumbing gets.
