On December 16, 2021, Optimism dropped the whitelist that had restricted who could deploy contracts on its optimistic-rollup mainnet, finally letting anyone ship code permissionlessly like they could on Ethereum proper. The chain went on to underpin the OP Stack, the shared codebase later adopted by Coinbase's Base and a growing constellation of other L2s.
