BNY Mellon announces plans to custody digital assets

BNY Mellon, the oldest bank in the US and the world's largest custodian, formed a new Digital Assets unit and declared itself the first global bank planning an integrated service for digital assets alongside traditional securities. New York's financial regulator confirmed a state-chartered bank could hold crypto without a BitLicense. The actual platform did not launch until October 2022, but the signal — Wall Street's plumbing making room for bitcoin — landed immediately.
