An attacker forged a Merkle proof against the BSC Token Hub cross-chain bridge and minted roughly 2 million BNB out of thin air, worth about $570 million at the time. The flaw was novel in that no existing funds were stolen; the bridge simply printed new tokens on demand, prompting Binance to halt the entire BNB Smart Chain to stop the loot from leaving, which trimmed the realized damage to around $100-130 million.
